Jensen JTA 220 Record Player Review

As Vintage record players go, perhaps the Jensen JTA 220 isn’t in the top bracket when it comes to appearance. It’s fairly basic and lacks a few of the bells and whistles that can be seen on other players. Where it does come out tops in this record player review, is in terms of functionality and price – it’s difficult to think of another lp player of this type on the market that’s so affordable, and just simply plays records.

Ok, so appearances first. The main body of the unit is encased in a wooden unit. The front panel of the unit is silver. Its light, weighing in at around seven pounds, making it easy to move around. Space-wise, it’s small, 10.6 x 12.5 x 6.2 inches, so it won’t be taking up much room. There’s 3 dial’s on the front panel – one for choosing phono or radio, tuning, and the ever-important volume. The unit itself feels solid and compact, which is what you’d expect when the makers are Jensen.

The Jensen basically does two things – it spins records and it plays the radio. The Radio is AM/FM stereo and works just fine. The lp player will play the usual assortment of 33/45/78′s. It’s got a dust jacket. The needle itself is manual, not auto-return, meaning you’ll have to lift it off when it comes to the end of aside.

The speakers, for an lp player this size, are adequate. For those who may prefer a bit more beef with their sound, there’s the option to wire up some external speakers at the rear where you’ll find a couple of output terminals. The option is also there to use headphones with the jack on the front. Or maybe you could plug a sound card in and record your favorite slabs of vinyl – there’s plenty of free software readily available on the internet allowing you to do just that.

The Jensen JTA 220 is straightforward to use and should especially appeal to those who like their technology simple. It’s literally good to go from the box (though be sure and make sure it’s plugged in.)

To conclude this record player review,  the Jensen JTA 220  is functional, compact, and easy to use. The sound and features are adequate. Perhaps it’ll appeal to those just starting out on their vinyl journey, or those who just listen occasionally. Or maybe those who know a good bargain when they see it. The Jensen JTA 220 is at the lower end of the price range, but it’s a good quality system and represents very good value.
